How to Make a Vintage Antique Cup Saucer Bird feeder Tutorial

Treat your feathered friends to nourishment from an elegant feeder.

Materials Needed:

  • 2 teacups
  • 1 saucer
  • 1/8" glass drilling bit
  • 3/4" dowel rod
  • Glass prism
  • Clear bead
  • Sturdy chain
  • Wire
  • 1 3/4" wood screw (or epoxy glue as an alternative)

Instructions:

  1. Begin by gathering two teacups and a saucer. It's advisable to use china from a local thrift shop rather than expensive chinaware.

For the Standing Feeder:

  • Using a glass drilling bit, carefully drill a hole through the center bottom of both teacups and the plate. Follow the directions on the packaging for drilling glass or china.
  • To prevent cracking, apply a few drops of water on the area being drilled to keep the blade and area moist.
  • Allow the drill bit to do the work without forcing it.
  • Drill additional holes in the bottom of the plate for drainage.
  • Take the teacup that corresponds to the plate and affix both to a painted dowel rod using a long screw. Insert the screw through the hole in the saucer and into the hole of the teacup, then into a pre-drilled hole in the dowel rod. Do not tighten the screw excessively.
  • Position the feeder in your preferred location and fill it with birdseed. Note: If you have cats, consider extending the pole for safety.

For the Hanging Feeder:

  • Drill several holes in the bottom of the plate for drainage.
  • Gently drill three additional holes spaced evenly around the rim of the teacup.
  • Use wire or metal loops to attach chains for hanging. Bring two chains together at the top and secure them with a metal loop or your preferred embellishments (you can also experiment with three chains spaced evenly apart).
  • Get creative with embellishments, including costume jewelry.
  • Attach a glass prism to the bottom of the cup by threading wire through it and up through the cup. Secure a clear bead to the wire.
  • Hang the feeder and enjoy the company of birds.
