TOURS || OLD ALLEGHENY CHRISTMAS TOURS, PITTSBURGH, PA

We took a house tour of Allegheny West, which is 8 blocks and the city's smallest neighborhood. The neighborhood is listed on the National Registers of Historic Places.

This area was once called the "Gold Coast" because of its mansion and luxury estates. It was known as "Millionaire's Row".

Many of the Victorian homes have been restored and the families who live in them open their homes up once a year for a Christmas tour. On our tour, we visited the Calvary United Methodist Church, the original home of William D. Hamilton who was president of the National Casket Company, the Old Hipwell Building, a 3-story Italianate style row house built between approx. 1881, Georgian Revival style townhouse, and a mid-19th century house owned by a wealthy widow, Letitia Caldwell Holmes. Not far from here was the first public park west of the Allegheny Mountains.
